Link stumbled in to the common room, first looking slyly to his left, then the right. Just to be on the safe side, he checked in front of him, above him, behind him, below him, and out the window. Nodding his head, seemingly satisfied with the cost being clear, he sat down and relaxed in a comfy chair. His sister was after him. Again. That girl never quits, Link thought, shaking his head as he did so. Honestly, all i did this time was tell her that her life would become seriously screwed up and she'd end up in jail unless she mended her ways immediately. I'm just trying to help her, but no, the thanks I get is being chased and almost electrocuted by her. According to my future-reading skills, I should be able to come out of here in about an hour and she'll have forgotten everything, and then I can go back to class! He settled back, grinning cheerfully, to wait. Five minutes later, he was massaging his head and clutching it in his hands. He was a telepath who could not turn his gift off, so he was stuck with being able to hear everyone's thoughts permanently. And there were alot of people in the common room at the moment, all attempting to get out of the cold. They were chatting Merrily and thinking way to loudly, so to Link, he was not only hearing everyone's conversation, but everyone's garbled thoughts mixed together as well. Thoughts were rushing at him from everywhere, and he just couldn't concentrate, or even hear himself think. Eventually, it became too much for him. He closed his eyes and massaged his temples, seriously considering sending out a telepathic message asking everyone to not think so loudly. Is it possible for people to be a bit more quiet? he mumbled. Seriously!

Aria was sitting in the common room, a low hum of chatter in the background, trying to focus on studying for her upcoming geography exam. She hated geography. Always had, always would. She didn't really even know why she was here, instead of the library, except that the library was always filled with the focused, silent nerd types, and it made her feel extremely uncomfortable and out of place. Every creak of the desk, every turn of a page, she felt even more trollish in the presence of all the .... studiousness. It wasn't like Aria had a hard time focusing. She was a restless person, that pretty much lived and breathed for a sense of purpose. But usually it took a purpose a bit stronger than acing the geo test to get her going.
She looked up as a tall guy stumbled into the room, looking a bit wary, out of place. He looked all around him, as if he was expecting someone to be stalking him. It was weird. Finally, he nodded, and settled down in a chair beside the couch at which she was working. His brow furrowed slightly in consternation, then he seemed to relax, a cheerful grin on his face. Aria watched him as his facial expression faded once more into stress. Needless to say, it didn't take much to distract her from the oh-so-fascinating geography text book. When he began to massage his temples, Aria couldn't resist a small giggle. He reminded her of a supply teacher she'd had once in grade eight - he'd made a huge, dramatic show of how much the noise was bothering him, as if to guilt-trip the class into settling down. It hadn't worked, as you'd probably have already guessed it you knew anything whatsoever about teenage kids. "Is it possible for people to be a bit more quiet?" the guy mumbled after awhile. "Seriously!" This time, Aria couldn't resist. "They're not that loud, dude," she said.

Link looked at the girl, then closed his eyes. He didn't have to see to know who she was; Aria Wren, daughter of Joshua Wren and Nichole McLaughlin. Ah, the wonders of telepathy. She looked nice enough, and from what he could discern from her thoughts, was that she was studying for geography and that he reminded her of a teacher. I am so offended, he thought, sifting through her mind a bit more. She controlled two elements, and had a family and a deceased best friend. Link was careful not to immerse himself completely in her memories, or else he'd be confused for days, wondering if his friend had actually died or not. They're very loud to me, Aria Wren, he told her, facing her exactly with closed eyes, which was probably kinda creepy. And you should probably get back to that geography if you don't want to fail. Oh, wait a minute, unless you spend at least half an hour on studying, you will fail miserably on that test. Me? I don't have to study for anything, luckily. But while I'm enjoying my free time, I'll think of you, and wish you luck. Link scanned everyone's presences quickly. Nope, no sign of Silver. Let's hope that none shows up, he thought.

Aria stared at him. Was he some kind of stalker? How the hell did he know all this? He was staring at her and speaking to her, with his eyes closed. Aria didn't know what to make of it, but she was fairly creeped out. Her eyes flashed to a hardcover book on the table a few couches away... Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer. Instantly it came to her... he was mind-reading. She was such an idiot. She still felt relief at the fact that he wasn't stalking her. If she'd known the liberties he was already taking with reading her mind, though, her innermost secrets coming to him as easily as anything, she'd have been furious. But as it was, she didn't have any idea that he already knew everything about her, everything that made her who she was.
Aria was annoyed by his last, slightly mocking remark, but she ignored it, as she was intrigued by the first thing he'd said. "They're very loud to me." She began to think about what he said, to wonder. Was her theory correct, that not only could he read minds and thoughts, but he couldn't keep them out? She's been quite annoyed initially at his insight to her life, but now she almost felt sorry for him. That would really bug her... having to hear every last unimportant matter anyone was thinking about? Why, she might become even more of a social recluse than she was now, just by trying to escape the minds of those around her! "You read minds," Aria said. Whether it was a question or not, she didn't say it like one. "But I admit, you had me pretty freaked out for a moment there."

Link felt the shock ignite in Aria's mind for a moment, then cool off as she realized he was a mind reader. She felt sorry for him. He flashed her a bright smile. That's what I do, he said. I either freak the hell out of people, or be intensely charming. Today, i chose to be scary. I'm too tired to be charming, Link's expression immediately shifted to worry as he remembered why he was tired. Um, just a random, off-topic question, he began anxiously. Have you seen my sister within the past fifteen minutes? Dark hair with a silver streak, kinda short, coldest eyes you're ever likely to see? Oh, and possibly a murderous look on her face? Link knew that his sister wouldn't stop looking for quite a while, and if she found him... he closed his eyes once again and looked in to the future. Yup, just as he had predicted. If Silver found him, he would be the next one sent to the hospital in intensive care. Seriously, she has anger management or something, he sighed, scratching the back of his head. Maybe i should take her to some therapy. Nope, wait, she'd kill me for sure. He turned his attention back to Aria, looking at her pleadingly. If you've seen my sister, please tell me, or else this whole study room might be destroyed by her. She's crazy!

"...If you've seen my sister, please tell me, or else this whole study room might be destroyed by her. She's crazy!" At first Aria was sure he was joking, but as she turned to him with a chuckle and saw no responding mirth in his eyes, she realised that he was dead serious - he looked more stressed than ever. Aria was alarmed, and extremely curious. She had been smiling at his previous comment, but now a look of confusion and worry crossed her face. She thought over his sister's looks, but she couldn't remember seeing this girl at all that day. She'd seen her in the past, if only to glare at each other as they passed each other by in the hallway, but what this guy was saying was a bit ... well, very... shocking. Like, sure, she could tell that the girl hadn't exactly been the friendly sort, but neither was Aria, and she wasn't about to blow up the room.
"No, I'm sorry," said Aria, apologetically, and anxiously. "I've been holed up here with this geography shit for the past half an hour or so." She leaned forward, her morbid curiosity getting the better of her. "What's she going to do, anyways? How can she destroy the room? I mean, what's her power that's so... " Aria searched for the right word. "... threatening?" It's one thing to have a bad control over your power, like me... thought Aria. But even I can refrain from destroying the room! If she's really that crazy... But Aria didn't really want to think about the consequences of that, so she simply allowed herself to try to believe that he was exaggerating.

At first, Aria had given a little laugh at his description of his sister being crazy. But Link had kept his face downright serious. Nothing was funny about this. Well, ya see, he began, leaning back, concentrating on talking and keeping an 'eye' on all the presence's coming and going. Unfortunately, he could only sense Silver when she was really close, so if she did come, it might be too late to evacuate himself. Silver is... unstable. You, at least, have a bit of control over your powers, so you can refrain yourself from using them, but to Silver, her powers are a second nature. She can't help but use them, and every time she does, they get a little stronger, which is bad. She has no control whatsoever, so when she's experiencing strong emotions, she loses the tiny scrap of self-control that she has. Link gulped. She's a weather manipulator. I doubt even you, who's ultra powerful, would be able to last. You see this? he rolled back his sleeve to show his arm, then flipped it over. On his underarm, there was a long, vivid scar, jagged and sore. She gave me this, he continued. When she was four. It still hasn't gone away. Even surgery can't cure it. And right now, she's really pissed at me. frankly, she scares the living shit out of me. quite suddenly, Link grinned. Ah well, it's all a part of life. If she kills me, the world will keep spinnin', right? And I've always wanted to know whether there was a heaven or hell, and where i would go, he pondered out loud. Hey, it might even be kinda fun!

Aria caught her breath as she stared at the long, jagged scar across the underside of Link's forearm. "Good grief," she muttered, sounding like her mother and not even caring. Even though he said Silver had given it to him when she was four, it looked red and vivid as if it was only a few weeks old. She began to wonder about Solstice. Before, she'd just hated Solstice because of all it represented in her mind; her best friend's death, her potential alienation from her family, and so on, so forth. But she'd never considered the potential dangers of being in the same school as lots of other kids with powers of their own, ten times more powerful than hers. And Link was right... her power was pretty damn dangerous... she shuddered as she remembered the day at the pool when she was five... all the people that had been injured... And if even Aria's power couldn't hold a candle to Silver's... She shuddered.
Aria smiled slightly, amused despite her worry, as he admitted his fear of Silver. She wished her own brother had actually admitted his fear of her aloud. She saw the fear in his every glance, every move, but it would have been so much more satisfying for him to actually say it. Aria Wren, terrifying her apparently tough older brother! What's next?
But Aria stiffened as she heard the rest of what he said. Because of her past, which he no doubt knew by now, having read her mind, Aria was a little sore about the whole the-world-won't-care-if-I-die perspective. So you can imagine the twinge of anger she felt as he spoke. "If she kills me, the world will keep spinnin', right? And I've always wanted to know whether there was a heaven or hell, and where i would go. Hey, it might even be kinda fun!" Her dark eyes flashed. "That's stupid," she said staunchly. "Plus, if she kills you in a burst of anger, in a temporary loss of self-control, once she comes back to herself, she'd feel horrible!" Aria didn't actually know this, as she knew nothing really about Silver, but she had to say something. The only way to control this... this threat of a sister was to not give up.

Link kept grinning. Her thoughts amused him, how anrgry she was about the whole 'world-keep-spinnin' thing, and how he shouldn't give up. Oh, I'm not giving up, Aria, he told her. Far from it. As long as Silver's around, I'll be around. as he said these words, his face was suffused with pride and love. I'm never gonna give up on her, and whatever she does, I'll always forgive her, even if she wipes out the whole of North-America. And you're right; if I died, she would feel terrible, and probably go kill herself. We're very close, even if we don't show it; you see, when I told my parents about my visions, and how i was hearing voices in my head.. he drew a breath. They told me to never tell anyone about it, and eventually it would go away; but it didn't. And then, Silver was born. To put it frankly, she scared the living crap out of my- his lip curled at the word. parents. They eventually just cast us out, and since I'm the older one, I had to look after us. She's all I have. So you see, Aria, the link (excuse the pun) between us is very strong, and if you see her, I won't be far behind. He coughed self-consciously. Woah, what a Kodak moment. Sorry I got all Hallmark-y. None of this will really matter if she finds me, so, for the love of god, don't tell her! Wait a moment, did the wind just pick up suddenly?

Aria smiled at his little "Kodak moment" as he'd called it. But deep down, she understood. That was how she and Mairi had been - practically sisters, despite the continual rivalry, spurred on by their parents' expectations of them - the daughters of the two richest families in the neighborhood. Mairi and Aria had been like polka dots and plaid - Mairi headstrong and reckless, Aria unique but comparatively laid-back - the more sympathetic of the two. But they always had each other's back - it was like a second nature. "I was never that close with my brother," she said. "I mean, we got along fairly well, but he doesn't even know the extent of my power, and he avoids me as it is. I could never imagine him being as loyal to me as you are to Silver. In my case, it's my friends. Mairi - she had a power too - and Caitlin and Jaclyn. Yep, we're like this," she added, crossing her fingers with a little laugh. Aria knew she was talking about Mairi like she was alive, and that she should stop, but she didn't really care at the moment. If she acted like her friend was alive, maybe she'd be able to convince herself. Not likely, but still.
When he pointed out about the wind, she moved toward the window, opening it slightly. A blast of wind hit her full in the face, blowing her silky dark hair back from her face. It blew the cover of her geography book closed. She was happy about that... "At least you got that right, Silver. Geography is for losers, she thought. Aloud, she said, "It seeems the weather manipulator is at work once again." She paused. "Uh, should we hide under the tables or something?" she joked. "Or will she stop at a mild hurricane?"

Link was already under the table, crouched in a defensive position. We hide for our freakin' lives! he yelled. Um, one moment. he closed his eyes and sent out a mental, suggestion to everyone in the room except Aria. A few moments later, everyone had filed out. I asked them politely to all leave, he explained. You know, with my mind. If you want to leave, it's not too late to save your life, Though I highly doubt she'll run for cover, he added mentally. Aria seemed like the kind of person who would face whatever was thrown at her straight on, though that would be kind of stupid if that meant a suicide. Please, please, PLEASE, for the love of God, don't let Silver do anything to her. he begged silently. I'll never lie again, I'll live in isolation to give people privacy, I'll be good for the rest of my life, I'll- wait, who am I kidding? Just then, the windows froze over, and the room temperature dropped several degrees, making it close to freezing. The ice windows shattered, sending sharp shards of glass flying straight for Link and Aria. Yup, definetly Silver, Link called out, before curling up to try and avoid the worst of the blast.

Aria's joke fell flat as she realized just how serious the situation was. Despite all that Link had said, she had underestimated Silver and what she could do. "We hide for our freakin' lives!" exclaimed Link, crouching as if bracing himself for an attack. He said something else, which Aria couldn't hear over the increasingly loud roar of the wind. She watched as he closed his eyes, concentrating - then all the students in the common room began to leave, in little groups of three and four that soon became much larger. Some of them looked undisturbed, and Aria knew that they were only leaving because of the telepathic message that Link had sent them. Others were leaving more quickly, pushing and shoving. There was definite alarm on their faces - Aria knew that they had noticed something amiss... like, hmm, maybe the fact that right now the wind was blowing several kilometers an hour stronger than it should be?
Aria was struggling to close the window against the strong force of the wind. Inwardly she cursed herself for having opened it in the first place. If only it was rain, thought Aria. Or forest fires. Or a tsunami. That, I can control... but wind... Goddammit! "If you want to leave, it's not too late to save your life," came Link's voice as Aria finally managed to close the window just in time for the weather to drop momentously. Leaving was a thought that hadn't even entered Aria's mind. When something bad was happening, Aria generally didn't panic or leave or lose focus... instead, her sensible, logical nature became her first instinct. A combination of her fierce loyalty and her natural desire for survival. "Don't give me that," she said. "I'll leave when you do."
Leaping out of the way as the now ice-coated window smashed inward, Aria found refuge under a table just in time to avoid being blinded by the shards of glass. "Holy shit!" she cried. "Can you message her... use your power... make her stop? Will she?" But Aria was grasping at straws, and she knew it. She doubted a desperate telepathic message from her brother would make Silver stop. She felt desperately around the floor for anything that could save them, but found nothing. The tables would be enough to shield them for now, but she wasn't sure how much longer they would last against Silver's storm.

Link looked at Aria. You're a brave idiot, he sighed, scarcely heard over the roaring wind. I gotta respect that. And no, there is no way I can get in Silver's head. I didn't want anyone to be able to mind-control her, because, for obvious reasons, that would be bad. So I set up a mental shield around her mind, so no one will ever be able to get in. Until I die, that is, The wind was really roaring by now. Link cursed while he adjusted his position, hiding behind a table that had been upturned. Telepathy was so useless in this type of situation. He was useless in this type of situation. Now, if this had been hand-to-hand, he might have been able to win, but with powers.... damn. You might want to save your geography text, Aria, he called out. Or else you'll fail. Just then, the wind died suddenly, and it seemed a lot quieter. A slight figure stepped through the window, brushing away the glass from the sill and sitting down on it, swinging her legs carelessly. I know you're there, Link, she called out. Her voice was mature, but had a hint of childishness in it. And someone else too. I can see their head. Come our. Or the wind might pick up again.

"You might want to save your geography text, Aria, or else you'll fail." Aria snorted. She couldn't imagine what being well-prepared for a geography test would do if she was going to die crouched under a table in the freakin' common room. Not that the situation wasn't horrid, but Aria could have imagined many more dignified ways to go. "My geography text will be fine," she called back, a laugh in her voice. "It is an inanimate object after all." To die hiding under a table in the common room and with her last words being about a geography textbook. Hello, heroic deaths! Aria laughed again, feeling a little punch-drunk. Giddy, almost. It was the adrenaline. Just then, the wind died as suddenly as it had come. Aria watched in awe as a figure stepped through the window, calling out to Link. "...And someone else too. I can see their head. Come out, or the wind might pick up again." Aria rolled her eyes. She was pissed. She swung her legs out from under the table, and stood up, facing Silver. "Hello, Silver," she said coolly. "I see you've decided to give the common room a new decorating theme. You know, a theme of broken glass that could have blinded half the people in this room if your brother hadn't used his power to make them leave?" Her vivid brown eyes shot sparks. Her hands twitched at her sides... she still had some leftover power in them from last time she'd used her ability, in a furious rampage of grief when she'd found out that Mairi died. Whether it was fire or water she didn't remember, but either way, it wouldn't be exactly pleasant to have scalding hot water, ice cold water, or fierce red flames shot at you in the face. Aria willed herself to keep her composure, and not lose control of her power.

Link winced as Silver turned her cold, emotionless ice eyes on Aria. She probably shouldn't have said that, he thought. But hey, at least it's not ME she's staring at! Who are you? Silver asked in her age-old yet naive voice. I don't think you have any right to talk to me like that. And besides, why should I care about them? They don't care a thing about me. It's a two-way thing, you know, Link edged over so he was right beside Aria. Oh, did I mention that my sister has some hate issues? he muttered quietly, so that Silver wouldn't hear him. Out loud, he said, It's okay, Silver. I'm here. No need to go all exterminator-y on everyone, She turned her ice eyes on him. Link... she began softly, then threw her hand out in front of her and a huge gust of wind knocked him backwards, slamming him in to the wall. He groaned, slumping down on to the sharp glass. You're such an idiot, she finished. Oww, he thought. I think she just broke every bone in my body. with a lot of effort, he raised his hand, which was badly cut and bleeding heavily. Oh joy, more scars from my crazy disillusioned little sister. It's going to be a long life. he sighed heavily, and just remained on the ground. Something told him moving would be extremely painful. Call it a hunch. Through slitted eyes, he waited to see what would happen next.
